Your Dream Lowndes Grove Wedding in Charleston

If you’re searching for timeless charm, waterfront views, and Southern elegance, a Lowndes Grove wedding is as iconic as it gets. From its 18th-century architecture to its versatile event spaces, this historic Charleston estate is a dream venue for couples — and a favorite for planners, too.

A Glimpse Into History at Lowndes Grove

Originally built in 1786, Lowndes Grove began as the summer home of Congressman William Lowndes. Once a part of a 200-acre orange grove and neighboring horse track, the property has evolved into one of Charleston’s most treasured landmarks. The home retains refurbished original flooring, paint colors, staircases, and tiling — preserving its rich legacy.

The surrounding neighborhood even pays tribute to its heritage, named after former owner William Wagner. Interior décor includes period pieces that elevate the historical ambiance, with every detail carefully restored to reflect the past. With the incredible ownership of Patrick Properties Hospitality Group, Lowndes Grove has become one of the most iconic venues in Charleston. A stunning waterfront venue surrounded by oak trees, Lowndes Grove is one of the most elevated wedding venues in Charleston, SC.

Suites for Getting Ready: Where the Day Begins

The Bridal Suite

Upstairs, the bridal suite offers elegance and natural light — two key elements for stunning getting-ready photos. The pink room is especially popular for bridal portraits, while the room on the left is best for morning light and the room on the right catches the golden glow later in the day. There’s ample space for hair and makeup teams, a private upstairs patio for a quiet bite or champagne toast, and even electrical outlets for ceremony musicians or custom touches like personalized flags.

The Groom’s Suite

On the first floor inside the historic home, the perfect moody room serves as a Groom’s Suite. Gentlemen can relax here throughout the wedding day and have close access to the whole property.

If couples are interested in a full property buyout, adding on the stunning River House serves as an incredible additional space. The River House can be utilized as a groom’s suite, the perfect retreat for the guys to relax, get dressed, and enjoy the day. It provides privacy, space, and convenience, and is also ideal if you’re hosting a band and need a green room. This separate space keeps the timeline smooth and stress-free for everyone involved.

The Perfect Lowndes Grove Wedding Ceremony

A Lowndes Grove wedding ceremony typically takes place on the estate’s stunning front lawn, with views of the Ashley River. Couples often face the water for their vows, creating a romantic and scenic backdrop. The shaded area at the very front of the lawn with stunning oak trees is ideal for bridal party portraits and a unique way of ceremony guest seating — keeping everyone cool and comfortable.

If you’re planning for unpredictable weather or just love the look of a classic tented affair, tent staking is allowed on the front lawn and works beautifully for ceremonies, cocktail hour, or dinner.

Cocktail Hour: From Lawn to Dock

After the ceremony, guests are naturally guided down toward the dock, where cocktail hour can unfold against a golden hour river view. The estate’s layout creates a seamless flow from vows to mingling, with multiple beautiful locations to stage signature drinks, light bites, and live music.

The upstairs patio is another hidden gem — great for setting up cocktail tables, ceremony musicians, or even a private toast between the newlyweds. We love the flexibility of the spaces available for cocktail hour at a Lowndes Grove wedding.

An Unforgettable Lowndes Grove Wedding Reception

Lowndes Grove offers a variety of spaces for a memorable reception. The Piazza is perfect for bars or escort card displays, while the foyer lends itself to food displays, gift tables, or even a rain plan bar. The River House is ideal for more intimate weddings (under 100 guests) and includes space for a band green room and dancing on the brick patio.

You can choose your tent top — clear, white, or fully draped — and work with trusted vendors like Snyder for tenting and Curated Events for rentals. Meanwhile, overlooking the iconic Ashley River tucked through arching oak trees and Spanish moss.

Logistics that Wedding Planners Dream of

From ample vendor and guest parking to indoor and outdoor restrooms, every practical detail is covered. Transportation can drop guests at the front gate, while buses wait offsite. Sound curfews are 10:30 p.m. on Saturdays and 10:00 p.m. on weekdays, and the venue handles routine spraying for pests.

The ability to create a completely custom event utilizing unique rentals, elevated tabletop, and lush florals brings us so much joy. And the in-house food and beverage allows for an effortless planning experience.

Why We Love Planning a Lowndes Grove Wedding

As wedding planners, we love Lowndes Grove for its beauty, flexibility, and historical charm. It’s a venue that makes our job easier — the flow of events feel effortless, the photo opportunities are endless, and the staff is always helpful and professional.

Whether we’re coordinating a dramatic boat arrival at the dock or staging portraits on the pink room’s vintage chaise, every moment at Lowndes Grove feels cinematic and meaningful.
